Sedona: Recs

ABOUT

In May 2023, we spent Memorial weekend in Sedona. We flew into Phoenix Friday, drove up to Sedona to hike Sat/Sun then drove back and flew home on Monday.

Best times to visit Sedona are Spring March-May and Fall Sept-Nov when temperatures are mild. Summer is quite hot and it snows in the winter. Note that it gets crowded during this high season, we had to be at the trailhead at 7-8am to secure parking spots.

Hikes

  • Boynton Canyon Trail & Subway Cave: 7.3 mile out and back, 1200 feet elevation. About 1/3 of the way you take a right off the trail to go to the Subway Cave (Note: there is no signage to reach the cave, details on how to find the Cave Here). After visiting Subway Cave the rest of the trail isn’t super special, but we finished it anyway to get a workout.

  • Devil’s Bridge: 4.2 mile out and back, 500 ft elevation. This is the famous rocky bridge formation. I waited in line for an hour to take a photo on the bridge. Small disclaimer that a) it’s dangerous and b) I felt dumb waiting in line to take a photo like a social media sheep.

  • Munds Wagon: 6.4 Miles roundtrip, 1300 feet elevation. Good variety of terrain- sandy washes, creeks and forests ending at a stunning viewpoint of most of Sedona. Disclaimer that the viewpoint is also accessible by dirt road. At times the hiking trail runs parallel to the road, and you can hear ATV’s + Pink Jeep Tour’s engines/music.

  • Cathedral Rock Trail: 1.5 miles, 750 elevation gain. Best at sunrise or sunset. Once you see the “End of Trail” sign, walk along the right edge of Cathedral Rock. The Cathedral Rock Pillar will shortly come into view around the corner. One of Sedona’s spiritual vortexes is believed to be at Cathedral Rock.

  • Doe mountain: 1.5miles roundtrip, 511 feet elevation gain. Great sunset views.

  • Birthing Cave: 2 miles roundtrip, 200 feet elevation. Go first thing before it gets busy.

  • Keyhole Cave: 2.2 miles, 30 foot climb to get onto the ledge. Its recommended that you have climbing experience or someone with a rope to assist the others. More details on how to get there. We did not do this given the warnings about the difficult ascent to the cave.
